World Environment Day turns 40 this year!

* World Environment Day was invented by the United Nations Environment Program, UNEP, in 1972.
* This year's theme is "Green economy: Does it include you?"
* Brazil is the main host country of WED.
* The official day is June 5th.
* In Stavanger the celebrations are held in cooperation between the City of Stavanger and various NGOs on 2nd and 3rd June.

Would you like to learn more about the environment? Or to enjoy a meal with local, organic and Fairtrade food? Or to plant trees at Dyrsnes? Join the celebrations of World Environment Day on 2nd and 3rd June!

(30.05.2012) World Environment Day, WED, is an official UN day which is celebrated all over the world. It has its 40th annivesary this year.

In Stavanger there will be various environmental activities in the city center on Saturday 2nd June, and on Sunday St. Petri Church invites to a "green service", while Stavanger Nature Center and the Forest Society of Rogaland welcome you to plant trees or to try out the Nature trail, canooeing and other outdoor activities.

Stavanger municipality cooperates with a number of environmental NGOs for the celebrations. The board of the Rachel Carson Prize will be present to inform about the prize. This year it is 50 years since Rachel Carson's history-making book "Silent Spring" was first published in the US.

Saturday 2nd June:

10.00-14.00 Organic market
Petriplassen (by St. Petri Church). Sale of organic food and children's clothing

10.00-15.00 Second hand market
Nytorget. Everyone can sell and buy second hand stuff.

11.00-13.00 People's breakfast
Kongsgård school yard. Free meal with organic, local and Fairtrade ingredients.

11.00-14.00 Waste separation. Play and learn about recycling.

11.00-14.00 Exhibit and quiz about biodiversity.

St. Petri church. Family service by vicar Arne Moe, followed by a hike to Godalen.

12.00-15.00 Plant a tree!
